Being an avid traveler, I have backpacked to many countries across the globe. However, one thing that always fascinated me was a backpacking tour to Udaipur, unarguably the most beautiful city in Rajasthan. As this was my first solo trip, I was pretty excited about this unique experience.
As soon as I landed, I booked an affordable car rental in Udaipur with a local driver and headed straight to the Bunkyard hostel, the most famous place for backpackers to stay in Udaipur. As I shared a bunker bed with a girl of my age, Tara, we quickly became friends and decided to explore the city together. Below are some of the top places we visited in Udaipur on my backpacking trip.
City Palace
Our trip began from the famous city palace, located on the banks of the serene Lake Pichola. Situated 30 metres above the Pichola lakeside and extending over its shores, Udaipur’s City Palace is the most impressive and largest of all palaces in Rajasthan.
Initially built in the 15th century by Maharana Udai Singh, this palace inherently passed over to successive Maharanas until it evolved as the stunning conglomeration of adorned buildings, towers and balconies.
Apart from witnessing the ancient heritage of this place, we also booked tickets for the famous light and sound show where we glimpsed the glory of Mewar through gleaming lights and music.
Sajjangarh Fort
It was around three when we reached the Sajjangarh Fort. Popularly known as the Monsoon Palace, this palace was the summer retreat of the Mewar rulers during their reign.
Upon entering this palace, we were stunned to see this beautiful fort nestled in the Bandera Mountain, situated at an altitude of approximately 940 metres above sea level, where we enjoyed the breathtaking sunset vistas.
Hathi Pol Bazaar
Hathi Pol Bazar is an ideal destination for shopaholics like me, and it was the most exquisite handicraft market that I have ever seen in my life.
Soon after entering this market, you can see intricately embellished and block-printed clothes, home decors items, jewellery, accessories and many more at the most affordable rates. As the market usually remains crowded, the best time that I would recommend visiting here is around 1 or 2 pm.
Ambrai Cafe
After touring different places from early morning, we headed straight to the famous Ambrai cafe to enjoy some delicious cuisines on the lakeside. Also, being a rooftop cafe, this place offers stunning evening vistas of Lake Pichola and is perhaps the best place to savour good food and wine.
Panera Bar
Unlike other bars and restaurants in Udaipur, Panera Bar is all about plunging into the plush sofas and sipping various types of beverages like a true Maharaja or Maharani.
Greatly marvelled as one of the most famous spots to visit in Udaipur at night, the bar likewise presents a stunning ambience, ideal for people who want to enjoy a peaceful night. The enchanting paintworks and royal portraits in this bar had our heart and made this place even more alluring to spend cosy evenings in Udaipur.
After witnessing such beautiful places in Udaipur, I can say that this city holds a stunning multicultural vibe! So, whether you are planning a solo backpacking trip or a fun-filled expedition with your loved ones, Udaipur never fails to amaze you.
