This compound is known as cannabigerol, or CBG for short. Cannabigerol was initially discovered in 1964 and is just one of more than 120 cannabinoids present in cannabis. Pharmacology. In addition, the receptors that CBD and CBG stimulate are distinct. When bound to the 5-HT1A receptor, CBG displays antagonist (blocker) behavior. These results demonstrated that pre-treatment with CBG prevented the anti-emetic effects of CBD, indicating that these two cannabinoids bind to the same site but exert opposite effects at the same receptor.
Encourages hunger. Another key distinction between CBG and CBD is the role each can play in promoting hunger. Experiments using CBG dosages in rats demonstrated that the animals consumed more than twice as much food as usual. Cannabigerol was found to have no effect on eating habits. However, cannabidiol was found to drastically decrease food consumption.

What role does CBG play in treatment?
Encourages hunger. As we’ve shown, CBG has been shown in animal experiments to significantly increase food consumption in rats. The potential therapeutic value of this result was highlighted in a 2017 study, which suggested that pure CBG could offer a new approach to treating human cachexia, lack of appetite, and wasting. The appetite-stimulating effects of CBG are similar to those of THC but without the psychoactive side effects.
Infections caused by the MRSA strain of bacteria. Additionally, CBG has shown its strength as a powerful antibiotic. Cannabigerol was one of 18 cannabinoids investigated for its antibacterial effects against MRSA. CBG performed the best of all the cannabinoids studied, and it was as effective as the potent antibiotic vancomycin.
Cancer. CBG’s capacity to suppress uncontrolled cell growth gives it anticancer characteristics. Studies have shown that it possesses anti-tumorigenic qualities by preventing the development of melanoma cells in the skin of mice.
